Artist Statement:

Beginning in the ‘60s, I worked as an itinerant sign-painter in the Haight-Ashbury, where I still live. I learned my craft on the fly, and I also painted the people and landscapes around me. For 25 years I worked at computer graphics, staring at a flat screen for many hours. That is possibly why I am fascinated by the textural effects that acrylics and cold wax medium afford. I am inspired by what happens when colors come together— when they meet with unexpected textures and the canvas itself in new ways. I love experimenting with the textural qualities that add depth to a painted surface. It is gratifying to let the beauty of the pigments and materials themselves speak through, I try to let pigment just be pigment, searching for its own beauty. Watching pigments interact with other elements of design and texture—it’s humbling to be a part of—and it can be fun, when you think you “got it” right. It’s also exasperating when something doesn’t work.
